That's Why We're Here - Beth Leis, General Surgery
March 27, 2024
What is your role and department?
I am an office lead/receptionist for the General Surgery clinic.
What does a typical day look like in your position?
I start my day by cleaning our exam rooms and vacuuming. I prep for the day and print any forms that need to be signed by the patients. Thirdly, I go through my bucket and start calling patients to see if they want to schedule a colonoscopy or an appointment with the doctors. I check in all our patients for the day and make them feel comfortable and answer any questions they might have.
How long have you been at Watertown Regional Medical Center? Have you always been in the same position?
I have been in this position and with this clinic for 32 years, including when it was privately owned and the last five years since it was bought by Watertown Regional Medical Center.
Why did you choose your profession?
I enjoy working with the patients. Everyday in General Surgery is different. You never know what we will see, which makes the job exciting and fun. I have worked with excellent surgeons, including Dr. Dachman, Dr. Fleming, and Dr. Stoddard who make the job educational and interesting.
What’s new in your department? Are there any new technologies being utilized?
There are a few things. About two years ago, the hospital added a daVinci robot which has been a great addition for patients needing minimally invasive surgical procedures. The TIF procedure for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been well received as well. Lindsey Werner, our PA, has been a huge asset to our clinic.
Teamwork and communication are important to providing safe and quality care, what other departments do you work closely with?
Our department works closely with PAT, surgery, centralized scheduling, and radiology.
How does your department contribute to the quality of care provided at WRMC?
Our clinic is always striving to make our patients feel heard. Our main goal is to make them feel comfortable and less nervous when discussing having surgery. We take our time to answer any questions they have so that they have a positive outcome.
If you weren’t at the general surgery clinic, what would you want to do/be?
I'd be a beautician.
What are some of your interests outside of work?
I enjoy playing volleyball, coaching volleyball with River City Volleyball, gardening, and spending time with my family.
What is your favorite local gem in the Watertown area? (Example: Restaurant, park, activity)
